Polymer clay earrings?!

DaWanda organised a bloggers competition for which I signed up. You would receive a surprise package with which to make something. I was expecting anything (or at least I thought so!) but what I didn't expect was a packet of polymer clay: Fimo Air Light to be precise. Well now there is something way outside my comfort zone...
But I went ahead and experimented with it which was kind of fun. I played with shapes and textures and colours, and in the end I decided I had better stick to something familiar and use it to make jewellery. So I made some beads and painted them, then assembled these simple earrings.
What I like about the Fimo beads is that they look very substantial but are actually super lightweight.

DaWanda heeft een bloggerswedstrijd georganiseerd waar ik aan mee heb gedaan. Je zou een verrassingspakketje in de post krijgen, waar je dan iets mee moest maken. Ik verwachtte van alles maar dus geen polymeerklei: Fimo Air Light om precies te zijn. Nou dat was wel even buiten mijn comfort zone...
Maar ik ben toch gaan experimenteren ermee, en dat was ook best leuk. Ik heb lekker gespeeld met vorm, textuur en kleur, en uiteindelijk besloot ik te blijven bij wat ik ken en er een sieraad mee te maken. Dus kleide ik wat kralen, verfde ze en maakte deze oorbellen.
Wat fijn is aan de Fimo is dat de oorbellen er substantieel uitzien maar eigenlijk superlicht zijn.

Maar, omdat het een wedstrijd is vraag ik hierbij iedereen of alsjeblieft te gaan STEMMEN! Degene die vóór 23 september de meeste 'likes' op DaWanda's facebook pagina krijgt wint! Stemmen kan hier: facebook. (stemmen is niet meer mogelijk)

There has been a lot of response to my request for pattern testers: thank you all for your interest!

I had a couple of very good suggestions that I will certainly use and update my pattern with. One of these was to increase the size of the smallest pattern parts, and another good one was to number the pattern pieces.
The pattern (and the kits) will be available soon, either here on my blog or in my DaWanda shop: please check back for updates.

Since I plan to start doing some (smallish) craft shows this winter I decided I had to make a couple more myself, and here they are (so far anyway :). I like how they look with different colours of felt:

Ik heb veel reacties gehad op mijn oproep voor patroontesters: bedankt allemaal!
Er zaten een aantal goede suggesties tussen de reacties die ik zeker ga gebruiken. Het patroon en de pakketjes zullen binnenkort beschikbaar zijn hier op mijn blog en/of in mijn DaWanda winkel dus kijk regelmatig even voor het laatste nieuws.

EDIT: my mum made this one! It's a snowy owl made from white-grey 'fairy' felt. And the ribbon was a gift from my sister's trip to Sweden :)

EDIT: deze is door mijn moeder gemaakt! Het is een sneeuwuil van grijswit sprookjesvilt. En het bandje was een kadotje van mijn zus na een vakantie in Zweden :)

Gah, I can be so slow sometimes :( Unfortunately it's usually due to lack of confidence: I make plans and get really excited by them, but after a while I inevitably start to doubt myself and wonder if I am any good at all (especially when trying new things). And then they get shelved. And gather dust.
But the-glass-half-full way of looking at it I suppose is that I (almost) never give up on anything, no matter how dusty it's become: if I still like it after a while I pick it up and do my best to finish it.

Anyway, what I am trying to tell is that I picked up a project I started some time ago: my felt medallions. The first one I designed was this owl: next I made a whale and a moose and I have ideas and sketches for tons more. I tried making it into a digital pattern but that was a big fail: I just couldn't get the pattern from paper into digital without it looking like it was drawn by a 6 year old.

So here is the new plan: I will simply print out the instructions, make a paper copy of the pattern and sell them as kits, including the felt and any other materials. I will sell them in my shop and I will also be able to take them with me when I (hopefully!) start doing craft fairs again this fall.

Now I would really like a few people to test the pattern before I actually start selling the kits! The idea is that I email you the instructions and either a .pdf or a .doc with the pattern pieces, which you will need to print yourself. Then you need a couple of bits of felt, some thread, a little bit of stuffing and a piece of ribbon to make the little owl. You can use the colours mentioned in the pattern or use your imagination, whatever you prefer. All I ask in return is that you let me know what your experience is: the pattern, the instructions, any problems or suggestions. Things like that.

EDIT: Wow, thanks for the overwhelming response! I think I have enough testers for now and I will start emailing the patterns out today.

Blech, soms kan ik zoooo traag zijn :( Niet leuk. Helaas is meestal gebrek aan zelfvertrouwen de oorzaak: ik verzin iets nieuws en begin daar vol enthousiasme aan, maar na een tijdje ga ik aan mezelf twijfelen en vraag me af waar ik nou mee bezig ben. En dan komt zo'n projectje stil te liggen.
Maar de glas-halfvol manier om ernaar te kijken is denk ik dat ik (bijna) nooit iets opgeef: hoe stoffig het ook is geworden, als ik het na een tijdje weer oppak en ik vind het nog steeds leuk, dan probeer ik het ook af te maken.

Goed. Wat ik eigenlijk probeer te vertellen is dat ik een projecje van een tijdje geleden weer heb opgepakt: mijn vilten medallions. Mijn eerste ontwerp was een uil, daarna kwamen een walvis en een eland en ik heb ideeën en schetsen voor nog veel meer. Ik heb geprobeerd er een digitaal patroon van te maken maar dat was een grote mislukking: het bleef er maar uitzien alsof het getekend was door een kind van 6.

Dus. Nu is het nieuwe plan als volgt: ik print gewoon de werkbeschrijving uit, maak een papieren kopie van de patroondelen en verkoop ze als pakketjes, inclusief vilt en andere benodigheden. Ik ga ze verkopen in mijn shop en kan ze ook meenemen als ik deze herfst (hopelijk!) weer crea marktjes ga doen.

Nu zou ik heel graag een paar mensen wille vragen om het patroon te testen voordat ik ze ga verkopen! Het idee is dat ik je een mail stuur met de werkbeschrijving en het patroon in ofwel .pdf of .doc formaat en dat je die dan zelf uitprint. Vervolgens heb je wat vilt, wat garen, een beetje vulling en een stukje lint nodig om het uiltje te maken. Je kan de kleuren van het patroon volgen of je fantasie gebruiken, het maakt mij niet uit. Het enige dat ik vraag is dat je me laat weten hoe het bevallen is: opmerkingen over de werkbeschrijving, het patroon, eventuele problemen enz.

Maakt niet uit waar je woont maar ik heb de beschrijving wel alleen in het engels en het nederlands.

Thrifty score - now what to do with it...?

I could not resist this box of colourful threads at a fleamarket a little while ago. I asked for the price, thinking I would pick a few I liked, and the lady said it was 3 euro's for the whole box. Crafts hoarder that I am, I just had to take them all home.

Laatst was ik op een vlooienmarkt waar ik deze doos kleurige garens niet kon weerstaan. Ik vroeg naar de prijs met het idee om er een paar uit te zoeken, maar toen ze zei dat het 3 euro was voor de hele doos moest ik het hele zaakje wel mee naar huis nemen (crafty spulletjes kan ik zelden weerstaan - ik kom er nog eens mee op tv ben ik bang).

There's a whole lot of them. Some have been partially used, but most are new. I checked and they're all 100% wool. Moth resistant even, which I suppose is a good thing...?

Het zijn er echt heel veel. Een paar zijn aangebroken maar de meeste zijn nog nieuw. Ik heb ze nagekeken en het is allemaal 100% wol. Mot-afwerend zelfs, wat mijn niet veel zegt maar het is vast goed...?

I have absolutely no experience in embroidering with tapestry wool: any tips you could give me? Or other uses for these pretties?

En nu nog een antwoord vinden op de onvermijdelijke vraag van de Man: Wat Ga Je Ermee Doen? (het was eigenlijk zijn tweede vraag, nadat hij eerst wilde weten waarom ik een vintage Adidas schoenendoos had gekocht. Mannen...)
Ik heb totaal geen ervaring met borduren met wol: heeft iemand nog tips voor me? Of andere ideeën voor wat te doen met al dit moois?
