Lately I have been having some sort of blogger's block. It's not that I don't have anything I would like to blog about; there is plenty going on around here, both on the crafty front and on others.
No, it's more that whenever there is something I would like to post on my blog, the thought of making (good) photographs, editing them, writing the post, translating it and finally putting everything together makes me tired... It just seems like too much work.
So, I decided that from now on, everything does not have to be perfect. I can make pics with my phone if I don''t feel like bringing out the big camera, and I can just add a few words without having to make a nice story.
I hope this will help. Wish me luck :)

De laatste tijd zie ik vaak op tegen het bloggen, jammer genoeg. Ik ga proberen wat minder hoge eisen te stellen aan mijn postjes. Wens me maar succes :)

I made him from some scrap fabric and assorted ribbons and trims. He was super easy to put together and looks very cute, especially when the wind catches his 'tentacles'.

* Gemstone spiral bracelets (including a tutorial)

After the fun I had making earrings I decided to finish some spiral bracelets I had started ages ago. I used some leftover chip beads that hadn't made it to the store and only a little of a roll of bracelet memory wire.
These too will go to my Etsy shop soon.

DIY - If you would like to make these yourself, here's a short how-to:
Supplies needed:
- half a string of chip beads
- a couple (2 to 4) of coils of bracelet-sized memory wire
- cutting pliers
- round nose pliers
Simply string the chip beads (sometimes some won't fit the wire) and when you're done, use the round nose pliers to make a loop on the end of the wire (PLEASE NOTE: memory wire is extremely hard to bend, but with a little practice it is possible!). Move all the beads to the closed end of the wire, then cut the wire, leaving some extra. Memory wire is extremely tough to cut as well, so you might not want to use your best pair of cutters as it may dull them. Make another loop on this end and voila! You're done!

Nadat ik mezelf zo had vermaakt met de oorbellen van vorige keer, besloot ik deze keer wat spiraalarmbanden af te maken waar ik een eeuwigheid geleden aan was begonnen. Ik gebruikte wat restjes edelsteen split dat niet in de winkel was beland en een beetje van een rol memory wire. 
Ook deze zijn bestemd voor mijn Etsy shop.

DIY - Voor als je deze ook zelf wilt maken volgen hier wat korte instructies:
Benodigheden:
- een halve streng splitkralen
- een paar (2 tot 4) draaiingen memory wire van armband formaat
- een kniptang
- een rondbektang
Eerst rijg je de splitkralen op het spiraaldraad (sommigen zullen er niet op passen) en als je daarmee klaar bent maak je met de rondbektang een rondje aan het eind van het draad (LET OP: memory wire is extreem stijf en moeilijk te buigen, maar met een beetje oefening lukt het wel!). Schuif alle kralen naar het gesloten eind en knip het draad door, wat extra ruimte latend voor het andere rondje. Memory wire is ook extreem moeilijk te knippen, dus is het verstandig om niet je allerbeste kniptang te gebruiken aangezien hij er bot van kan worden. Maak een tweede rondje aan dit uiteinde en voila! Je bent klaar!

Last weekend I carried my gemstone bead stash out onto the patio (I sell beads here so there is some considerable stash), sat down and had a lot of fun putting together these earrings. I could not believe how long it had been since I did this (years!) but luckily jewellery making turns out to be one of those 'riding a bicicle' type things and I hadn't forgotten how.
I especially like how the green one turned out. And also the donuts: I love those beads and thought they would look best just by themselves.
Ironically I hardly ever wear jewellery myself so these, like most I make, will either end up as gifts or in the shop (Etsy / DaWanda). *EDIT: they've all been added to the shops now!

Vorig weekend sleepte ik mijn voorraad edelsteenkralen het terras op (ik verkoop kralen hier dus ik heb best wel wat voorraad), ging lekker onder de parasol zitten en genoot enorm van het samenstellen van deze oorbellen. Ongelofelijk hoe lang ik dat al niet had gedaan (jaren!) maar gelukkig blijkt sieraden maken iets te zijn dat je (ook alweer net als dat fietsen) niet verleert.
Ik vind vooral de groene erg goed gelukt. En de donuts ook: ik vind dat erg leuke kralen en zo in hun eentje komen ze het beste uit.
Ironisch genoeg draag ik bijna nooit sieraden, dus deze zullen weer, zoals bijna alles wat ik maak, worden weggegeven of verkocht in mijn shop. (Etsy / DaWanda). *EDIT: inmiddels staan ze allemaal in de shops!

Crafting with kids: leftover bits of felt

Well, hello!
You may remember me, I used to blog here. I seem to have gotten just a teensy bit sidetracked somewhere along the way (not to lay blame or anything, but it all this guy's fault; I've been reading like a maniac these last 4 months) but promise to do better now. After all, I used to blog because I like doing so :)

Hallo daar!
Misschien herinner je me nog: ik blogde hier vroeger. Ik ben een beetje afgedwaald (niet om met vingers te wijzen ofzo, maar het is allemaal de schuld van deze meneer hier; ik heb me de afgelopen 4 maanden een slag in de rondte gelezen) maar ik beloof beterschap. Tenslotte blogde ik omdat ik het leuk vond om te doen :)

I do have a little something to show you though. Today me and Little Brother took all my leftover little bits of felt out into the garden and strung them on some cotton yarn. Then we hung them around the garden.
Above is mine (I knotted the yarn between every scraps, giving it a fuller look) and below are Little Brother's creations. Dangling from his very own pear tree, by the way (of which he is very proud).
Unfortunately we ended up using only a very small amount of felt, so I still have enough scraps to make about a thousand or so more. So much for scrapbusting I suppose. Oh well, we did have fun and he felt very big to be using a real and very pointy and sharp needle :)

Ik heb gelukkig wel iets om te laten zien. Vanmiddag ben ik samen met Kleine Broer de tuin in gegaan met al mijn kleine vilt restjes. Die hebben we aan wat katoenen garen geregen en in de planten gehangen.
Boven zie je de mijne (ik knoopte steeds het garen tussen elk stukje vilt, daardoor heeft het een wat vollere look) en hieronder zie je die van Kleine Broer. Hangend aan zijne eigenste perenboom trouwens, waar hij super trots op is.
Helaas gebruikten we maar een klein deel van de restjes, dus ik heb nog genoeg over voor nog een stuk of 1000 meer. Maar al hebben we niet echt restjes opgemaakt, we hadden wel lol en Kleine Broer vond het erg stoer om met een echte puntige, scherpe naald te werken :)

~ DIY kits for my little owls - now for sale

Just a quick post to tell you I made DIY-kits from my little felt owl pattern. I used lovely 100% wool felt and gorgeous fairy felt (you can choose which one). The kit includes all materials: felt, ribbon, thread and stuffing wool. Available through Etsy and DaWanda.
They make great gifts too! :D

Even een snel berichtje om te vertellen dat ik DIY-kits (of materiaal pakketten) heb gemaakt voor mijn vilten uiltje patroon. Ik heb alleen heel mooi 100% wolvilt gebruikt, en nog mooier sprookjesvilt (waarvan je er één kan uitkiezen). De kit omvat alle benodigde materialen: vilt, lint, garen en vulwol. Te koop via DaWanda en Etsy.

I liked this stitch a lot: another one that has the possibility for great texture. I couldn't think of very many variations though, so I was finished with it rather quickly.

* WIP wednesday - Little Brother's patchwork quilt

It took me only 3 years to finish it, but I made Big Brother a quilted patchwork blanket. Obviously Little Brother had to have one too, so I have been hoarding collecting fabric for his for a while now.

Ik deed er slechts 3 jaar over, maar ik maakte voor Grote Broer een patchwork quilt deken. Natuurlijk moest Kleine Broer en ook één hebben, dus en ik al een tijdje stofjes voor hem aan het verzamelen.

I decided on a square patch pattern. The squares measure 15 cm, and I need 160 of them for a single person blanket. My cutting mat had died on me (and my rotary cutter isn't working properly either) so I cut them all by hand. I already had some wrist problems so this wasn't helping, but after several weeks of cutting a couple of fabrics at a time I finally finished cutting them all! Now onto the sewing :D

Ik koos voor een vierkantjes patroon. De vierkantjes zijn 15 cm en ik moet er 160 hebben voor een eenpersoonsdeken. My snijmat gaf de geest (en mijn snijmes deed het ook al niet goed) dus moest ik ze allemaal met de hand knippen. Ik had al last van mijn pols en dit hielp niet echt, maar na een aantal weken van elke avond een paar stofjes knippen heb ik ze nu allemaal klaar! Op naar het naaien :D

When I asked Little Brother what colour (or colours) he wanted for his he was very clear: "PINK!". Now I don't mind that pink is his favourite colour (he is the only boy in school who proudly carries his Dora backpack into class every day) and I would have happily made him a pink blanket, but various moms told me their sons loved pink too, until the day they all of a sudden decided that pink was for girls and girls are stupid and therefore, they now HATE pink. And at the speed I make quilts that would mean Little Brother might have grown out of his "pink phase" before I even finish this quilt.
So I decided to make his green (like some of his baby things) with just a little bit of pink thrown in.
So far, he loves it! I just asked which one was his favourite fabric and he says he loves them all :)

Toen ik Kleine Broer vroeg welke kleur (of kleuren) hij wilde was hij heel duidelijk: "ROZE!". Nou vind ik het prima dat roze zijn lievelingskleur is (hij is het enige jongetje op school dat trots met zijn Dora rugzak de klas in gaat) maar ik hoorde van een paar moeders dat hun jongens ook dol waren op roze, totdat ze plotseling besloten dat roze voor meisjes is en meisjes stom zijn, oftewel: nu HATEN ze roze. En met mijn quilt-maak-snelheid zou Kleine Broer al uit zijn "roze fase" zijn voordat ik de quilt zelfs maar af heb.
Dus besloot ik om de zijne groen te maken (net als een aantal van zijn baby spulletjes) met wat roze accenten.
En tot nu toe vindt hij hem prachtig! Ik vroeg hem wat hij het mooiste stofje vond en zijn antwoord was: allemaal :)

So I had a birthday last month... I can't even begin to tell you how much I don't like my own birthday, and it gets worse every year. It's not the age thing: I don't really care about that part. It's more a matter of expectations for me I guess.
But ANYWAY..... I bought myself an e-reader with the money I received. I had been thinking of getting one for a while because I hoped it would get me to read more, and actually it worked just like I hoped it would. I just chuck it in my bag whenever I go anywhere and read whenever I have to wait anywhere. (I read 3 books in the first 4 days I had it!)

Ik was jarig vorige maand... Ik heb echt een hele, hele erge hekel aan mijn verjaardag, en elk jaar wordt het weer ietsje erger. Het is niet de leeftijd: dat boeit me echt niet. Het is meer iets van verwachtingen ofzo.
Maar HOE DAN OOK... ik heb een e-reader gekocht van mijn verjaardagsgeld. Ik wilde er al een tijdje één hebben omdat ik hoopte dat ik dan weer meer zou gaan lezen, en dat is ook precies wat er gebeurde. Ik gooi hem in mijn tas en lees lekker overal waar ik ook maar even moet wachten. (in de eerste 4 dagen dat ik 'm had las ik al 3 boeken uit!)

But it needed a sleeve to protect it from all the junk I carry around in my bag. So I made one from a piece of this vintage curtain I thrifted some years ago. I love the flower pattern, but since it's a weird synthetic fabric, not stretchy but a little too think for quilts and such. I haven't used it yet (someday I want to make a bag out of the rest of it). I lined it with a pink polkadot cotton and padded it with fleece batting (?).

Maar ik moest een sleeve hebben om 'm te beschermen tegen alle zooi in m'n tas, dus maakte ik er één van een stuk vintage gordijn dat ik ooit op een rommelmarkt kocht. Ik vind het bloemenpatroon geweldig, maar het is een beetje vreemde stof: nogal dik, synthetisch en niet echt geschikt voor patchwork ofzo (ik wil ooit de rest gebruiken om er een tas van te maken). De voering is een roze polkadot katoentje en ertussen zit volumevlies.

I considered writing a tutorial, but then I found this one here on this blog, which is exactly the same as mine (apart from her using a thick fleece fabric for the lining instead of padding). And it's really detailed too so if you want to make your own, just have a look at her blog.

I like seeing it. It really cheers up the iside of my bag ;)

Ik was nog van plan om een tutorial te schrijven, maar toen vond ik deze hier op dit blog en die is precies hetzelfde (alleen gebruikt zij in plaats van volumevlies een dikke fleece stof voor de voering). En hij is super duidelijk geschreven dus als je er ook één wilt maken, kijk dan even op haar blog.

Ik vind 'm leuk. Hij fleurt echt de binnenkant van mijn tas op :)

* Craft Fair

So, I neglected to tell everything about my little craft fair back in october. It was probably because I had some mixed feelings about it: money-wise it was pretty much a disaster with me selling basically nothing, but it was a positive experience with a lot of leassons learned and also suprisingly very friendly interactions with the other sellers. As it turns out crafty people really are a friendly bunch :)

Now I've decided to sign up for the next one in march. My reasoning being a). I can't really do much worse; b). I want to improve my stall and c). I would like to get more experienced so it will become a smaller step to do other fairs that are farther away (this one is just a tiny thing in a local shopping mall visited mainly by elderly people who are mainly interested in making cards).

Next time I will try to remember to make some good pics of my stall, so I can ask for your feedback on it. I did make some pics of the stuff I brought though, see below (let me know what you think!). In the meantime I need to start making more stuff! Again!


 
Nou, ik heb dus geen verslag gedaan van mijn ervaringen met het creamarktje dat ik had gedaan in oktober. Waarschijnlijk omdat ik er nogal gemengde gevoelens over had: financieel was het een ramp en heb ik praktisch niets verkocht, maar verder was het een heel positieve ervaring waarvan ik veel heb geleerd en op weg ben geholpen door mijn bijzonder vriendelijke en behulpzame mede-verkopers. Crea-mensen zijn echt wel heel aardig :)

Ik heb inmiddels besloten om me ook in te schrijven voor de volgende keer in maart. Mijn redenen om het weer te proberen zijn a). veel slechter dan de eerste keer kan het niet gaan b). ik wil de opzet van mijn kraam verbeteren en c). ik wil wat meer ervaring opbouwen zodat het de stap kleiner maakt om ook eens een grotere markt wat verder weg te doen (dit is een lokaal marktje in een winkelcentrum dat voornamelijk wordt bezocht door ouderen die vooral interesse hebben in het maken van kaarten).

De volgende keer zal ik wat goede foto's van mijn kraam nemen zodat ik jullie om feedback kan vragen. Ik heb wel wat foto's van wat van de spullen die ik had meegenomen (laat me weten wat je ervan vindt!). Ondertussen moet ik een heleboel dingen gaan maken! Alweer!

After losing it for over 6 months I finally found my joy in embroidery again, and continued with my TAST stitching. This is how my second sampler is looking at the moment: besides adding some stitches I seamed the edges because they were seriously starting to unravel.

Na mijn plezier in borduren ruim een half jaar kwijt te zijn geweest heb ik het nu weer teruggevonden, en ben weer verder gegaan met mijn TAST steken. Zo ziet mijn tweede merklap er nu uit: naast de nieuwe steken heb ik ook de randen omgezoomd omdat het nogal erg begon te rafelen.

Stitch 30: Oyster Stitch
Another one that took me a while to get the hang of. Once I did I wasn't too thrilled with it.

Nog een steek waarvan het even duurde voordat ik 'm door had. En toen dat eenmaal lukte was ik er niet heel erg van gecharmeerd.

Stitch 31: Algerian Eye Stitch
I like this one and had a little fun with it: especially with the tiny stars and the borders.

Dit vond ik een leuke steek en heb er mee gespeeld: vooral met de piepkleine sterretjes en de randen.

Stitch 32: Cast On Stitch
This stitch was a first for me: I'm ashamed to say it but I couldn't bring myself to finish it :\
Apart from french knots (even these I use only sparingly) I really dislike all the knot-type stitches, and this one was no exception. But because it takes relatively long to finish this stitch it's even more tedious to work. So I made two of them and moved on to the next stitch... (if you look carefully in the first image they are the red dots on the left just below satin stitch).

Steek 32: Cast On Stitch
Dit was een mijlpaal voor mij maar wel in negatieve zin: ik kon mezelf er niet toe brengen deze steek netjes af te maken :\
Naast french knots (en zelfs die gebruik ik spaarzaam) heb ik een hekel aan alle knoop-achtige steken, en deze was daarop geen uitzondering. Maar omdat het ook nog eens een steek is waar je heel lang mee bezig bent is het nog vervelender om te maken. Dus maakte ik er twee en ging verder met de volgende steek... (als je goed kijkt zie je in de bovenste foto twee rode stipjes aan de linkerkant, net onder de satin stitch).
