Today I have another Finished Object to show. Or rather...... Tadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Vandaag heb ik weer eens iets te laten zien dat af is. Oftewel.... Tadaaaaaaaaaa!

Here I showed a the beginning, and now it's finished!
Well, actually it was finished 2 weeks ago, I only had to finish the flowers and attach them to the bag.

Hier had ik al een beginnetje laten zien, en nu is ie af!
Eigenlijk was ie al twee weken geleden af, maar ik moest alleen nog de bloemetjes afwerken en erop zetten.

There is a group especially for things made by her patterns: here.
The yarn is Saskia (from a store called Wibra): 1 euro for a 100 grams ball. I used a little less than a complete ball of each colour, so that's only 4 euros for the whole bag!
In hindsight I would have liked to use a nicer yarn, because this feels quite synthetic. But the colours are nice and bright, and as an experiment I think it succeeded very well, because I wasn't even sure I would finish it, since I'm pretty new to crochet and not sure I would enjoy making something a little bigger.

Op Flickr is een groep speciaal voor haar patronen: hier.
Het garen is Saskia van de Wibra: 1 euro per 100 grams bol. Ik heb van alle 4 de kleuren net geen hele bol gebruikt. Dus maar 4 euro voor de hele tas!
Ik zou achteraf wel liever een mooier garen hebben gebruikt, want dit voelt wel een beetje plastiekerig aan. Maar het zijn lekker felle kleurtjes en ik wist van te voren natuurlijk ook niet of ik het wel af zou maken. Dus bij wijze van experiment is ie zeker geslaagd!

Blog birthday!

Tomorrow is my anniversary!
Because it will be exactly 3 years ago I posted my first blogpost. And I never expected to enjoy blogging as much as I did :) Reading other blogs and also your responses to my postst is something I enjoy immensly.
There are times I have to be careful not to lose myself completely in the blogging about creative stuff and not actually doing anything myself, and at other times I simply have no time or energie or just don't feel like it, but I always return here :)

I have gone through a lot of change in the past 3 years, and so has my blog. A different name, different subject and over 100 followers (!). I learned crochet, started experimenting with natural dyeing and ecoprinting, dare to call myself a experienced knitter (though not a fast one), temporarily closed my beadshop, and still haven't finished my first patchworkproject. The most notable change: I stopped focusing on the endresult, but try to take as much pleasure as I can out of making stuff.

Because in the end that's what it is about: the fun you have and the relaxation and renewed energy you get from making things with your own hands, shaping it and watching it grow. Right?

Morgen is het feest!
Want dan is het precies 3 jaar geleden dat ik mijn eerste blogpost plaatste. En ik had niet verwacht zoveel plezier te beleven aan het bloggen :) Het lezen van andere blogs en jullie reacties op mijn berichtjes: het is iets waar ik enorm van geniet.
Soms moet ik wel oppassen dat ik mezelf niet verlies in het bloggen over creatieve dingen en zelf tot niets meer kom, en soms heb ik er gewoon een tijdje geen zin / tijd / energie voor, maar ik kom altijd weer terug :D


Ik heb een hoop veranderingen doorgemaakt in de afgelopen 3 jaar, en ook mijn blog is meeveranderd. Een andere naam, andere onderwerpen en inmiddels alweer 107 volger (!). Ik heb leren haken, ben aan het experimenteren geslagen met ecoprinten en natuurlijk verven, ik durf mezelf een ervaren breister te noemen (hoewel niet een snelle), heb mijn kralenwinkel tijdelijk gesloten, en ik ben nog steeds niet klaar met mijn eerste patchworkproject. Misschien wel de belangrijkste verandering: ik richt me niet meer alleen op het eindproduct, maar ik probeer ook zoveel mogelijk te genieten van het bezig zijn met het maken van dingen.


Want daar gaat het tenslotte om: om het plezier dat je hebt en de rust en energie die je krijgt van het bezig zijn met je handen, en het zien vormen en groeien van je maaksels. Toch?




Een dikke knuffel, een kus en een dankjewel... aan jou!
Want zonder lezers zou het toch een stuk minder leuk zijn ;)

Success at last!

As I showed here before, I had tried my hand at natural dyeing and/or ecoprinting several times, without ever getting any satisfying results.
I am the kind of person who will never buy a book, take a course or do a workshop when trying out a new technique: I will simply start trying myself and learn along the way. Sometimes this works just fine, and sometimes not so much... So I went back to all the blogs I visited on this subject and decided that I probably really should try mordanting my cotton before dyeing... and succes!

These are some random fallen leaves from the park, picked up together with Little Brother, wrapped in fabric and simmered for a few hours. Some results:

Ik had al een paar keer laten zien wat ik aan het uitproberen was met het natuurlijk verven en/of ecoprinten. Maar echt tevreden was ik er nooit mee.
Ik ga altijd meteen iets zelf doen; een cursus of workshop volgen of een boek ergens over kopen, daar doe ik niet aan ;) Soms werkt dat, maar soms dus ook niet... Dus heb ik nog maar eens al die blogs erover gelezen, en kwam zo op het idee om toch echt maar eens een beitsmiddel (mordant) te gebruiken... en dat bleek dus een wereld van verschil te maken!


Dit zijn wat willekeurige hefstblaadjes: van de grond geraapt samen met Kleine Broer, in de gebeitste stof gewikkeld en een paar uurtjes laten sudderen. Hierboven wat resultaten:

I have been working for a while now on updating my Flickr account, because when I started blogging I uploaded my pics to Blogger, and now I am making myself fix that.
But pfffffffffffff... I am getting a bit tired with it!

Ik ben al een hele tijd bezig met het updaten van mijn Flickr account, omdat ik, toen ik net begon met bloggen, mijn foto's nog via Blogger oploadde. En dat moet ik nu opeens rechttrekken van mezelf.
Maar pffff, ik word het wel een beetje zat hoor...

A while ago I showed these mushrooms with a promise to explain how I made them. So even though it's been a while (two years!) here is the tutorial :)
Note: these aro not toys. I let my boys play with them gently, and the mushrooms are ok with that, but they don't respond well to being tossed around or getting wet or dirty.

What I used to make them:



Eens heeeeel lang geleden liet ik hier deze paddestoeltjes zien, met daarbij de belofte dat ik eens een beschrijving ervan zou maken. Tsja en ook al is dat 2 jaar geleden (!), belofte maakt schuld. Dus bij deze :)

Opmerking: dit is geen speelgoed. Ik laat mijn jongens er wel voorzichtig mee spelen, en de paddestoeltjes kunnen daar ook wel tegen, maar ze kunnen er niet tegen als ze gegooid worden en ook niet als ze nat of vies worden.

Wat ik nodig had om deze te maken:

- some spelt (wheat)
- some wool for filling
- some rice
- some bits of felt
- needle
- pencil
- siccors
- embroidery thread
- some bits of fabric
- a couple of pins (not pictured)

Cut the fabric into a circle, and the felt into a slightly smaller circle. Use cups, bowls, plates, cans etc. to draw around. I used a CD-rom for the fabric and a big roll of tape for the felt. Cut from the other colour of felt (for the stem) shapes similar to these:



- wat spelt
- wat vulwol
- wat rijst
- restjes vilt
- naald
- potlood
- schaar
- borduurgaren
- restje stof
- een paar spelden (niet op de foto)

Knip uit de stof een circel, en uit het vilt een wat kleinere circel. Gebruik als mal kopjes, schaaltjes, bordjes, blikken enz. Ik gebruikte voor de stof een CD-rommetje en voor het vilt een rol bruin plakband.
Knip uit de andere kleur vilt (voor de steel) ongeveer de vormen zoals hier:

Use blanket stitch to sew the two parts of the stem together along the side seams:


Festonneer dan de twee delen van de steel aan elkaar langs de zijnaden:

Cut a circle from the felt that approximately matches the size of the bottom (the wider side) of the stem:



Knip nu een circel uit het vilt die ongeveer overeen komt met de bodem (de dikkere kant) van de steel:

And use blanket stitch to attach it to the stem:

En festonneer die vast:

Now fill the stem with rice (I had a packet of rice that was passed the use-by date, but you could also use small pebbles or peas, whatever you happen to have laying around really):

Vul nu de steel niet te vol met rijst (ik had een pak rijst liggen dat over de datum was, maar je kan ook steentjes gebruiken of erwten, wat je maar hebt liggen eigenlijk):

Push it down with the back of a pencil:



Stamp het aan met de achterkant van een potlood:

And then add a bit of wool to keep everything in place (you could also use a bit of cotton wool or something else):


En stop er daarna nog een plukje wol in om alles op z'n plek te houden (je zou hier ook een propje watten o.i.d. voor kunnen gebruiken):

Now place the felt circle on top of the stem:


Leg nu de vilten onderkant van de hoed op de bovenkant van de steel:

And sew it into place:


Naai hem met overhandse steken rondom vast aan de steel:

Using large stitches, make the spores on the bottom of the cap:

Maak nu, weer met een overhandse steek, de sporen op de onderkant van de hoed:

Pin the top (fabric) of the cap to the bottom (felt). Because the top is larger you need to gather the fabric a bit as you sew it to the felt:


Speld nu de bovenkant van de hoed (van stof) op de vilten onderkant van de hoed. Aangezien de bovenkant groter is moet je de stof wat verdelen en rimpelen terwijl je hem vastzet:

Using blanket stitch again, sew along the edge of the cap but leave an opening to fill it through later:



Festonneer langs de buitenkant van de hoed maar laat een stukje open om te kunnen vullen:

Now fill the cap with spelt. I had it laying around and I like the texture and the sound of it, and also that it is very lightweight and doesn't maken you mushroom fall over (but you could use something else if you prefer):


Vul nu de hoed met spelt. Ik had dit toevallig liggen en ik vind het een leuk resultaat geven; het knispert en voelt heel apart aan maar het is wel heel licht dus je paddestoel wordt niet topzwaar (maar je kan natuurlijk ook iets anders gebruiken):

Close the gap and tadaa! Done!
