Fiber Art Thingy

I finished this little fellow! (WIP photos here)
It started as a little experiment but I like the result so much I decided to frame it and hopefully someday it will get to be on display in my craft room. Imaginary craft room, that is.

I started with a little scrap of wool felt. I randomly placed some scrap wool roving and lightly needle felted it to the surface. It started to look like a landscape to me so I embroidered the birds and the fence. Then it started to become a garden so I embroidered the edges of the path and needle felted the natural wool to resemble gravel. Then came the french knot (or colonial knot; I don't remember) flower beds, and last came the vegetable patch.

I love it! I feel unreasonably proud of this little thing actually *grins*
I think the combination of techniques and materials worked really well. The needle felted wool has a slightly transparant look, not unlike watercolor. And the whole thing has great texture too.
The scale is a little off though; it's too big to be turned into a brooch and too small to be anything else. So I sewed it into a picture frame to make it easier to display.

I will be experimenting further with this. Maybe next time I will try adding fabric to the mix.

Good morning! I finally managed to take some pictures this wednesday so I can actually show a couple of things I'm working on (or should be working on) .
First there is this little experiment. On a whim I needle felted some scrap wool roving to a piece of scrap wool felt to try embroidering over it. From there everything just came together as I was working on it, without having a clear image in my head. It's really wonderful when that happens.
I would love to finish it. I just need to find the time for a little more stitching.


Goedemorgen! Eindelijk heb ik eens wat foto's gemaakt zodat ik wat kan laten zien op deze WIP-woensdag.
Ten eerste dit kleine experimentje. Het is een restje wolvilt met daaroverheen wat restjes wol genaaldvilt, en daaroverheen weer geborduurd. Het ontstond terwijl ik ermee bezig was, zonder dat ik een duidelijk plan voor ogen had. Heerlijk is dat.
Ik zou het erg graag afmaken; nu alleen de tijd vinden voor nog wat steekjes.

Second is this Baktus scarf (the pattern is super simple and can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/norwayneedles/2963651011/). I started knitting it in the fall, because for once I thought I'd knit myself a scarf before I actually needed it. The knitting was done in less than a week, but since I used scrap yarn there is a gazillion ends to weave in. So that's where I left it... all winter.


Dan deze Baktus sjaal (het patroon in supermakkelijk en staat hier: (http://www.flickr.com/photos/norwayneedles/2963651011/). Ik begon met breien in de herfst, zodat ik eindelijk eens een sjaal af zou hebben voordat ik hem daadwerkelijk nodig had. Ik was klaar met breien in minder dan een week, maar omdat ik restjes gebruikte zijn er een triljoen eindjes weg te werken. Dus daar ben ik gebleven... de hele winter.

I made yet another cuff. This time I changed the design a bit, removing the button and buttonhole and adding a little elastic to make it fit easily.
This one won't be making it to my Etsy shop since it was made as a thank-you gift for my friend, but I really like the look of this one so I will be making more alike.


Weer een cuff gemaakt. Deze keer heb ik het ontwerp wat gewijzigd, onder andere de knoop-en-knoopsgat sluiting vervangen door een stukje elastiek.
Deze gaat niet naar mijn Etsy shop want ik maakte hem als bedankje voor een vriendin, maar ik ben erg tevreden over dit ontwerp dus ik ga er zeker meer maken.

Another quick post.... one of these days I will make the time to write a proper one, I promise!

This time I just wanted to show you a new felt embroidered cuff I made. This was supposed to be a gift for my friend, but it didn't fit her so I am putting it in the shop. Now I get to make her another one :)

Weer een snel berichtje... binnenkort ga ik echt eens de tijd maken om een echte te schrijven, beloofd!

Nu wil ik alleen even een nieuwe geborduurde vilten cuff laten zien die ik had gemaakt voor een vriendin, maar ze past hem helaas niet. Dus gaat deze naar de shop en mag ik een nieuwe gaan maken :)

OMG I can't believe it's been so long! I have been such a bad blogger....
I want to say sorry (again) to the winners of my previous giveaway; your parcels are underway and I hope they arrive swiftly.
The second giveaway (see below) is still open by the way.
I have so much to show you all but have to wait until I can take pictures. But because a blog post without images is no blog post at all, here is a quick pic of a new felt pattern I am working on. I'm not happy with the eyes yet... so it's still a prototype of sorts.

Ik heb heel veel om te laten zien maar dat moet wachten totdat ik goeie foto's kan maken. Maar omdat een blogpost zonder plaatjes geen blogpost is, hierbij een kiekje van een nieuw patroontje waaraan ik werk. Ik ben nog niet helemaal tevreden met de ogen... dus is het voorlopig slechts een soort prototype.

Crafting with kids: leftover bits of felt

Well, hello!
You may remember me, I used to blog here. I seem to have gotten just a teensy bit sidetracked somewhere along the way (not to lay blame or anything, but it all this guy's fault; I've been reading like a maniac these last 4 months) but promise to do better now. After all, I used to blog because I like doing so :)

Hallo daar!
Misschien herinner je me nog: ik blogde hier vroeger. Ik ben een beetje afgedwaald (niet om met vingers te wijzen ofzo, maar het is allemaal de schuld van deze meneer hier; ik heb me de afgelopen 4 maanden een slag in de rondte gelezen) maar ik beloof beterschap. Tenslotte blogde ik omdat ik het leuk vond om te doen :)

I do have a little something to show you though. Today me and Little Brother took all my leftover little bits of felt out into the garden and strung them on some cotton yarn. Then we hung them around the garden.
Above is mine (I knotted the yarn between every scraps, giving it a fuller look) and below are Little Brother's creations. Dangling from his very own pear tree, by the way (of which he is very proud).
Unfortunately we ended up using only a very small amount of felt, so I still have enough scraps to make about a thousand or so more. So much for scrapbusting I suppose. Oh well, we did have fun and he felt very big to be using a real and very pointy and sharp needle :)

Ik heb gelukkig wel iets om te laten zien. Vanmiddag ben ik samen met Kleine Broer de tuin in gegaan met al mijn kleine vilt restjes. Die hebben we aan wat katoenen garen geregen en in de planten gehangen.
Boven zie je de mijne (ik knoopte steeds het garen tussen elk stukje vilt, daardoor heeft het een wat vollere look) en hieronder zie je die van Kleine Broer. Hangend aan zijne eigenste perenboom trouwens, waar hij super trots op is.
Helaas gebruikten we maar een klein deel van de restjes, dus ik heb nog genoeg over voor nog een stuk of 1000 meer. Maar al hebben we niet echt restjes opgemaakt, we hadden wel lol en Kleine Broer vond het erg stoer om met een echte puntige, scherpe naald te werken :)

~ DIY kits for my little owls - now for sale

Just a quick post to tell you I made DIY-kits from my little felt owl pattern. I used lovely 100% wool felt and gorgeous fairy felt (you can choose which one). The kit includes all materials: felt, ribbon, thread and stuffing wool. Available through Etsy and DaWanda.
They make great gifts too! :D

Even een snel berichtje om te vertellen dat ik DIY-kits (of materiaal pakketten) heb gemaakt voor mijn vilten uiltje patroon. Ik heb alleen heel mooi 100% wolvilt gebruikt, en nog mooier sprookjesvilt (waarvan je er één kan uitkiezen). De kit omvat alle benodigde materialen: vilt, lint, garen en vulwol. Te koop via DaWanda en Etsy.
Ook leuk als cadeautje! :D

* Craft Fair

So, I neglected to tell everything about my little craft fair back in october. It was probably because I had some mixed feelings about it: money-wise it was pretty much a disaster with me selling basically nothing, but it was a positive experience with a lot of leassons learned and also suprisingly very friendly interactions with the other sellers. As it turns out crafty people really are a friendly bunch :)

Now I've decided to sign up for the next one in march. My reasoning being a). I can't really do much worse; b). I want to improve my stall and c). I would like to get more experienced so it will become a smaller step to do other fairs that are farther away (this one is just a tiny thing in a local shopping mall visited mainly by elderly people who are mainly interested in making cards).

Next time I will try to remember to make some good pics of my stall, so I can ask for your feedback on it. I did make some pics of the stuff I brought though, see below (let me know what you think!). In the meantime I need to start making more stuff! Again!


 
Nou, ik heb dus geen verslag gedaan van mijn ervaringen met het creamarktje dat ik had gedaan in oktober. Waarschijnlijk omdat ik er nogal gemengde gevoelens over had: financieel was het een ramp en heb ik praktisch niets verkocht, maar verder was het een heel positieve ervaring waarvan ik veel heb geleerd en op weg ben geholpen door mijn bijzonder vriendelijke en behulpzame mede-verkopers. Crea-mensen zijn echt wel heel aardig :)

Ik heb inmiddels besloten om me ook in te schrijven voor de volgende keer in maart. Mijn redenen om het weer te proberen zijn a). veel slechter dan de eerste keer kan het niet gaan b). ik wil de opzet van mijn kraam verbeteren en c). ik wil wat meer ervaring opbouwen zodat het de stap kleiner maakt om ook eens een grotere markt wat verder weg te doen (dit is een lokaal marktje in een winkelcentrum dat voornamelijk wordt bezocht door ouderen die vooral interesse hebben in het maken van kaarten).

De volgende keer zal ik wat goede foto's van mijn kraam nemen zodat ik jullie om feedback kan vragen. Ik heb wel wat foto's van wat van de spullen die ik had meegenomen (laat me weten wat je ervan vindt!). Ondertussen moet ik een heleboel dingen gaan maken! Alweer!

I made another needlebook; this one was supposed to be a gift for Sinterklaas but I had forgotten to bring it with me, so now I'm giving it this evening.
This one is a lot more photogenic than the last! Still I'm not sure if I should call it purple or blue.
It's made of sprookjesvilt or 'fairy felt' and I handstitched around the edges with buttonhole stitch. I used pinking scissors for the inside 'pages', added a couple of needles and wrapped it up with a length of embroidery thread in the colour I used.

I'm considering whether or not to make a bunch of these for my next craft fair, what do you think?

Ik maakte nog een naaldenboekje; deze was bedoeld voor 5 december maar ik was 'm vergeten mee te nemen... Dus krijgt ze hem vanavond.
Deze is wat fotogenieker dan de vorige! Maar ik kan alleen niet besluiten of het nou paars is of blauw.
Het is gemaakt van sprookjesvilt en rondom gefestonneerd met borduurgaren. Deze keer heb ik de 'blaadjes' met een kartelschaar geknipt. Een paar naalden erin en een stukje bijpassend borduurdraad eromheen geknoopt en klaar.

Ik denk erover om er een stel te maken voor mijn volgende creamarkt: wat denk jij?

* Owl pattern - finally online!

After all the help I got testing the pattern I FINALLY got around to finishing the pdf and putting the pattern online!
I had a hard time deciding whether or not to make it available as a free download, but in the end I decided against it. So now it's for sale in my etsy shop for only € 2,50 here!
I plan to make many more patterns and some of these I will make available for free here on my blog. I am also in the process of making complete kits for the owls, and I have a couple of them that I made myself and that would like new homes. So watch for updates!

On the crafty front I have been having a bad case of startitis: I keep starting new projects (crocheting, sewing, another patchwork blanket even!) but nothing is getting finished just yet. Maybe tomorrow... if I can stick to it long enough ;)

Na alle hulp die ik kreeg bij het testen van mijn patroon heb ik nu EINDELIJK de pdf afgemaakt en staat ie online!
Ik vond het een moeilijke beslissing maar uiteindelijk heb ik ervoor gekozen om hem niet gratis op mijn blog te zetten maar te verkopen voor maar € 2,50 hier via mijn Etsy shop.
Ik ben van plan om nog veel meer patronen te maken en sommige daarvan zullen hier op mijn blog gratis te downloaden zijn.
Ook ben ik bezig met het maken van DHZ-kits van de uiltjes, en ik heb er hier ook nog een paar liggen die ik zelf heb gemaakt en die nog een nieuw thuis zoeken. Dus blijf in de buurt voor updates!

Op knutselgebied ben ik op het moment heel veel aan het beginnen en niets afmaken (haken, naaien, zelfs een nieuwe patchworkdeken!) Misschien dat ik morgen iets af heb en kan laten zien... als ik mezelf er lang genoeg op kan focussen tenminste ;)

Just popping in for a quick post: I will tell you all about my first craft show soon,and also I still owe a dutch version of my last tutorial.
But for now I wanted to share the news that I officially started my own business last week! I'm really excited about it, and already I realise I underestimated the amount of time it takes up. So that's the reason I'm manking some changes: I now have way too many websites, blogs and facebook pages to keep up with and I want to wrap them all together a little more transparantly. Not completely sure how I'm going to do that though :) And when.

Anyway, here's a new felt pendant necklace I made. This time I embroidered both sides instead of just one. It's available in my DaWanda shop (and coming soon to my all new Etsy shop too!)

Ik kom eventjes langs voor een snel berichtje. Binnenkort vertel ik alles over mijn eerste creamarkt en ik vergeet ook niet de nederlandse versie van mijn vorige tutorial.
Maar voor nu alleen even het nieuwtje dat ik officieel mijn eigen bedrijf ben begonnen! Ik bleef steeds een beetje hangen in de hobbysfeer maar nu ga ik het serieuzer aanpakken. Ik merk al meteen dat er best wel meer werk in gaat zitten als je alles netjes bij moet houden haha! Maar dit is de reden dat er wat dingen zullen veranderen hier: ik heb veel te veel webbpagina's, blogs en facebook pagina's om te onderhouden, dus dat moet allemaal wat overzichtelijker. Alleen weet ik nog niet precies hoe :) En wanneer.

Maar hoe dan ook: hier is een nieuwe vilten ketting. Deze keer heb ik beide zijden geboduurd in plaats van maar aan één kant. Hij staat al in mijn mijn DaWanda shop (en binnenkort ook in mijn spiksplinternieuwe Etsy shop!)

There has been a lot of response to my request for pattern testers: thank you all for your interest!

I had a couple of very good suggestions that I will certainly use and update my pattern with. One of these was to increase the size of the smallest pattern parts, and another good one was to number the pattern pieces.
The pattern (and the kits) will be available soon, either here on my blog or in my DaWanda shop: please check back for updates.

Since I plan to start doing some (smallish) craft shows this winter I decided I had to make a couple more myself, and here they are (so far anyway :). I like how they look with different colours of felt:

Ik heb veel reacties gehad op mijn oproep voor patroontesters: bedankt allemaal!
Er zaten een aantal goede suggesties tussen de reacties die ik zeker ga gebruiken. Het patroon en de pakketjes zullen binnenkort beschikbaar zijn hier op mijn blog en/of in mijn DaWanda winkel dus kijk regelmatig even voor het laatste nieuws.
