I thought it would be useful (and fun) to keep a journal of my natural-dyeing experiments.
So here are the first entries; I used some things I had available in my kitchen. Unfortunately it's not exactly the proper season for dyeing with fresh garden materials...
Het leek me wel handig (en leuk) om een verslag bij te houden van mijn natuurlijk-verven experimenten.
Hier de eerste vermeldingen; ik heb wat dingetjes gebruikt die ik in de keuken had liggen. Helaas is het helemaal het verkeerde seizoen om echt met dingen uit de tuin aan de slag te gaan...
Left to right: black beans, (used) coffee pads and passed-the-date teabeags.
I used some bits of unbleached cotton fabric and some leftover bits of pure wool yarn. I didn't use a mordant. For the coffee and the tea I used boiling hot water, for the beans I used cold water (I've made the mistake once to use hot water on these: it makes them really gross and doesn't do the colour any good). Then I let them cool, put them in these little jars en left for 2 days.

Ik heb wat stukjes ongebleekte katoen gebruikt en wat restjes 100% wollen garen. Niet voorbehandeld met een beitsmiddel. Voor de koffie en de thee heb ik kokend heet water gebruikt, voor de bonen niet (al eens eerder die fout gemaakt; daarvan worden ze heel vies). Daarna laten afkoelen, in de potten gestopt en 2 dagen laten staan.

The coffee slightly tanned the wool, but hardly any.
The tea did a little more: it turned the cotton the exact shade of band-aids and the wool is a little beige-like.
(I rinsed the ones on the bottom of the page with vinegar but to no effect)

De koffie heeft alleen de wol iets gekleurd, maar nauwelijks.
De thee heeft wat meer gedaan: het katoen heeft precies de kleur van pleisters gekregen :) en ook de wol is wat beige-achtig.
(de onderste materialen zijn nagespoeld met azijn maar dat had in dit geval geen effect)
And then the black beans:
Nice blue colour with just a touch of grey and also purple. The effect on the cooton is much stronger than on the wool (though the wool is more of a true blue).
Rinsing with vinegar instantly changes the colour to pink-ish purple (on the wool more of a violet-purple).
Altogether I like the results of this little kitchen experiment. I wonder if the colours will stay of change / fade in time.
En dan de zwarte bonen:
Mooi blauw geworden met een tikje grijs en ook een tikje paars. Op het katoen veel sterker effect dan op de wol (de wol is wel blauwer).
Na spoelen met azijn verkleurt het (meteen!) naar roze-achtig paars (de wol meer violet-paars).
Al met al een leuk resultaat. Ik ben erg benieuwd of de kleuren blijvend zijn of langzaam zullen verkleuren naar iets anders.
