Fiber Art Thingy

I finished this little fellow! (WIP photos here)
It started as a little experiment but I like the result so much I decided to frame it and hopefully someday it will get to be on display in my craft room. Imaginary craft room, that is.

I started with a little scrap of wool felt. I randomly placed some scrap wool roving and lightly needle felted it to the surface. It started to look like a landscape to me so I embroidered the birds and the fence. Then it started to become a garden so I embroidered the edges of the path and needle felted the natural wool to resemble gravel. Then came the french knot (or colonial knot; I don't remember) flower beds, and last came the vegetable patch.

I love it! I feel unreasonably proud of this little thing actually *grins*
I think the combination of techniques and materials worked really well. The needle felted wool has a slightly transparant look, not unlike watercolor. And the whole thing has great texture too.
The scale is a little off though; it's too big to be turned into a brooch and too small to be anything else. So I sewed it into a picture frame to make it easier to display.

I will be experimenting further with this. Maybe next time I will try adding fabric to the mix.

I made yet another cuff. This time I changed the design a bit, removing the button and buttonhole and adding a little elastic to make it fit easily.
This one won't be making it to my Etsy shop since it was made as a thank-you gift for my friend, but I really like the look of this one so I will be making more alike.


Weer een cuff gemaakt. Deze keer heb ik het ontwerp wat gewijzigd, onder andere de knoop-en-knoopsgat sluiting vervangen door een stukje elastiek.
Deze gaat niet naar mijn Etsy shop want ik maakte hem als bedankje voor een vriendin, maar ik ben erg tevreden over dit ontwerp dus ik ga er zeker meer maken.

This stitch felt a bit odd: I couldn't really get into the hang of it. (notice the little bit of cross-stitching on the lettering? that one word took me FOREVER!)

Just popping in for a quick post: I will tell you all about my first craft show soon,and also I still owe a dutch version of my last tutorial.
But for now I wanted to share the news that I officially started my own business last week! I'm really excited about it, and already I realise I underestimated the amount of time it takes up. So that's the reason I'm manking some changes: I now have way too many websites, blogs and facebook pages to keep up with and I want to wrap them all together a little more transparantly. Not completely sure how I'm going to do that though :) And when.

Anyway, here's a new felt pendant necklace I made. This time I embroidered both sides instead of just one. It's available in my DaWanda shop (and coming soon to my all new Etsy shop too!)

Ik kom eventjes langs voor een snel berichtje. Binnenkort vertel ik alles over mijn eerste creamarkt en ik vergeet ook niet de nederlandse versie van mijn vorige tutorial.
Maar voor nu alleen even het nieuwtje dat ik officieel mijn eigen bedrijf ben begonnen! Ik bleef steeds een beetje hangen in de hobbysfeer maar nu ga ik het serieuzer aanpakken. Ik merk al meteen dat er best wel meer werk in gaat zitten als je alles netjes bij moet houden haha! Maar dit is de reden dat er wat dingen zullen veranderen hier: ik heb veel te veel webbpagina's, blogs en facebook pagina's om te onderhouden, dus dat moet allemaal wat overzichtelijker. Alleen weet ik nog niet precies hoe :) En wanneer.

Maar hoe dan ook: hier is een nieuwe vilten ketting. Deze keer heb ik beide zijden geboduurd in plaats van maar aan één kant. Hij staat al in mijn mijn DaWanda shop (en binnenkort ook in mijn spiksplinternieuwe Etsy shop!)

After almost a year since the last one, I made another one of my embroidered felt cuffs. This one is made of a soft lavendar purple felt with aqua, lime and pale blue embroidery in the style of a sampler.
Now to decide whether or not to put it in the shop... I would really like to keep it for myself: I just love these colours!


Na bijna een jaar sinds de laatste heb ik weer eens een geborduurde vilten cuff armband gemaakt. Deze is van een zacht lavendel-achtig paars met aqua, lime en lichtblauw borduursel in een soort merklap stijl.
En nu beslissen of ik 'm in de shop ga zetten... Ik zou 'm graag lekker zelf houden: ben helemaal gek op deze kleuren!

I LOVE lil fish studio! Lisa Jordan is an amazing textile artist and everything she makes, clearly inspired by nature, is incredibly beautiful. If you don't know her, please have a look around her blog.
She makes these sweet little detailed embroidered felted stones and even has a has a tutorial on her blog for the felting part. Following her instructions (more or less) I tried felting a couple of stones.
I found it a lot harder than I thought it would be. On one of the stones the felt just refused to stay together and I had to try stitching it back together after it dried. Pretty much a total fail (see below).

The other one felted nicely, and then just lay there being a nice but plain grey fuzzy felted stone. So last night I tried embroidering on it. This was also a lot harder than I expected: because the layer of felt is uneven my stitches seemed to have a mind of their own and refused to go where I wanted them to. But I like the result: nowhere near perfect but still it's a soft sweet little object. 
The best part: when Big Brother spotted it he lifted it in his hand and said: "Is this a rock? It IS a rock! Can I have it?". I explained to him this was just my first try and I wanted to keep it so that I could learn from it. So now he has requested one for himself. A blue one. The best compliment I could hope for :)

Ik ben GEK op lil fish studio! Lisa Jordan is een geweldige 'textile artist' en alles wat ze maakt is zichtbaar geïnspireerd door de natuur en ongelofelijk mooi. Als je haar niet kent moet je echt even een kijkje nemen op haar blog.
Ze maakt hele mooie gedetailleerde geborduurde gevilte stenen en ze maakte zelfs een tutorial voor het vilt-gedeelte. Haar tutorial volgend (min of meer) probeerde ik ook een paar stenen te vilten.
Het bleek een stuk moeilijker dan ik had gedacht: bij één van de stenen wilde de wol niet aan elkaar blijven plakken en heb ik het na het drogen geprobeerd aan elkaar te stikken. Dat was geen succes (zie foto's).

De andere verviltte wel goed, en toen 'ie klaar was lag 'ie daar een beetje mooi maar saai zacht grijs te wezen. Dus gisteravond probeerde ik 'm te borduren. Ook dit was lastiger dan ik had verwacht: omdat de laag vilt nogal onregelmatig is wilde mijn steken gewoon niet daarheen waar ik ze wilde hebben. Maar ik ben blij met het resultaat: verre van perfect maar toch is het een mooi zacht en wollig dingetje.
En helemaal leuk: toen Grote Broer 'm zag liggen pakte hij 'm op en zei: "Is dit een steen? Het IS een steen! Mag ik 'm hebben?". Ik legde uit dat dit mijn eerste probeersel was en dat ik er nog van wilde leren. Dus nu heeft 'ie er één voor zichzelf besteld. Een blauwe. Het mooiste compliment :)

FINALLY got around to making something! How I've missed this!

Anyway, it's another bag charm. My MIL was constantly telling me how much she loved mine, so I made her one for her birthday. When filling it with wool, I added a bit of dried lavender to give it a nice scent. I think she liked it :)

Goed. Het is dus een nieuwe tashanger. Van mijn schoonmoeder hoorde ik steeds hoe dol ze was op de mijne, dus maakte ik er eentje voor haar verjaardag. Bij het vullen heb ik er tussen de wol ook wat gedroogde lavendel in gestopt, om er een lekker luchtje aan te geven. Ik geloof dat ze er wel blij mee was :)

I'm glad I got around to doing a little more embroidery lately (again partially inspired by TAST). This is another one of my felt cuffs; this time in blood red & black, with black flowers and thorny vines. A little grey to give it a little more life, and the backing is also in grey. And another vintage button from the grandmothers' stash :)
I liked the gothic-fairytale look in the end: it was a bit of a challenge to use a single colour, and I did compromise with the dark grey french knots, but I think it kinda works. What do you think?
EDIT: now available in my shop.
EDIT: it SOLD in less than 4 hours after listing! Yay :)

Eindelijk kon ik weer even lekker wat boduren (wederom deels geinspireerd door TAST). Het werd weer een vilten cuff: deze keer in bloedrood & zwart, met zwarte bloemen en doornige stengels. Een beetje donkergrijs om het wat levendiger te maken, en de achterkant is ook grijs. En nog een vintage knoop uit de oma's voorraad :)
Ik vind de gothic-sprookjes look wel mooi: het was een uitdaging om 1 enkele kleur te gebruiken en ik heb een beetje vals gespeeld met het grijs, maar ik vind het resultaat wel geslaagd. Wat vind jij?
EDIT: nu in mijn winkeltje te koop.
EDIT: hij is VERKOCHT, minder dan 4 uur nadat 'ie in de winkel kwam! Yay :)

Little embroidery experiment I'm not sure I like...

For Mother's Day I started this little embroidered gift for my mum. I hurried to get it finished in time, but when I was just about done.... I wasn't sure I was happy with it anymore.
The 8 buttons represent her 8 children and grandchildren. The rest is basically just for fun.
I think it looks a bit messy and random. But I'm still not sure, because I also think it has a certain charm this way... I just don't know! Opinions please?! ;)

Voor moederdag begon ik aan een klein borduurdingetje. Snel aan gewerkt want het moest op tijd af, maar toen ik bijna klaar was wist ik opeens niet meer of ik er nou blij mee was.
De 8 knoopjes staan voor haar 8 kinderen en kleinkinderen. De rest is eigenlijk alleen versiering.
Ik vind het er een beetje rommelig en willekeurig uitzien. Maar ik weet het ook niet helemaal zeker, want ergens vind ik dat ook wel weer wat hebben... Aaah! Ik weet het gewoon niet meer! Jouw mening graag?! ;)

Week 21 of Take A Stitch Tuesday. This week: Butterfly Chain Stitch.
Wow, I missed some weeks here! Trying to get back into it though. I started a new sampler on which I will randomly place the different stitches. I will try to catch up on the ones I missed, but I am going to focus on doing all of the new stitches.
I really liked this one; not at first sight but after a couple of tries it grew on me. The little butterfly is my favourite :)

Week 21 van Take A Stitch Tuesday. Deze week: 'Butterfly Chain Stitch'.
Wow, heb ik even een paar weken gemist! Maar ik doe mijn best om weer mee te gaan doen nu. Ik ben aan een nieuwe merklap begonnen waarop ik willekeurig de steken een plekje geef. Ik zal proberen om de gemiste steken in te halen, maar focus vooral op het bij blijven.
Ik vond deze erg leuk; niet meteen maar wel na een paar pogingen. Vooral het vlindertje vind ik leuk :)

Somewhere last week I finished something I had been embroidering on for a while. I have been totally absorbed in embroidery sinde I first joined TAST at the beginning of this year and I have to admit, since finishing this piece I am just a little fed up with it. For now, because I'm sure it will come back!

Ergens vorige week heb ik iets afgemaakt waar ik al een heel tijdje op aan het borduren was. Ik ben helemaal into borduren sinds ik begon met TAST aan het begin van dit jaar, en ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat ik het, sinds deze af is, er wel een beetje mee heb gehad. Voor nu dan, want het komt vast wel weer terug!

I had intended this to be a Tutorial so when I started I took tons of pictures, but as it progressed I kept forgetting to make more. So now it's Sort Of A Tutorial.
I started with two pieces of felt for the outside, and two pieces of a very soft fabric for the inside (to protect the glass), a button, a bit of felt for the tag with the buttonhole in it, and some felt shapes. All the felt and the button were part of a recent gift I received, and I liked the idea of using them together to create something really REALLY bright and colourful.

Dit had eigenlijk een Tutorial moeten worden, maar ik vergat steeds foto's te maken dus is het nu maar Een Soort Van Tutorial.
Ik begon met 2 lapjes vilt voor de buitenkant, 2 hele zachte stukjes stof voor de binnenkant, een klein stukje vilt voor het flapje met het knoopsgat, en wat vilten vormpjes. Al het vilt en de knoop waren deel van een heel lief kadotje dat ik laatst kreeg, dus ik wilde ze graag samen gebruiken voor iets heel, HEEL kleurigs.

First I embellished the felt pieces (here's where I forgot to take pics). This took up the most time.
Then I used a buttonhole stitch to sew each layer of felt to a layer of the fabric for the lining. On one of them I  sewed the tag piece by placing it between the two layers before stitching.

Eerst versierde ik het vilt (hier heb ik dus geen foto's van), dit koste me de meeste tijd.
Daarna naaide ik met een festonsteek elk lapje vilt op een lapje van de voeringstof. Tussenuit 1 ervan naaide ik het flapje voor de sluiting.

Then I used a simple running stitch to stitch everything together, leaving open one of the shorter sides, and a bit extra down the longer sides (for easy access).

Daarna naaide ik de twee delen met een stiksteek op elkaar, maar liet 1 van de korte kanten open, samen met een klein stikje van de lange kanten (om makkelijk de bril eruit te kunnen halen).

Lastly I cut the buttonhole in the tag and sewed the button in place. I have to admit I'm not completely happy with this bit, might have to change it someday.

Als laatste knipte ik het knoopsgat in het flapje en naaide de knoop op z'n plaats. Ik ben hier niet helemaal tevreden over, misschien dat ik dit nog eens zal aanpassen.

It's not exactly a glasses case (more of a glasses cozy) since there's no padding, but all the felt and fabric layers make it pretty sturdy so I feel comfortable putting my glasses in there.

Het is niet helemaal een brillendoos (meer een brillenmapje), aangezien er geen vulling in zit, maar alle lagen stof en vilt maken het toch een vrij stevig geheel dus ik heb wel het idee dat mijn brillen er veilig in zijn.
